The Beautiful Brown BOLD Women is a vision of Candace King Williams, former model and advocate for women of all ethnicities.
The purpose of this project is to uplift women of color while making a BOLD statement of our strength, sisterhood and feminity. To accomplish this statement 100 Beautiful Brown BOLD women took to the streets of the City of Pittsburgh for a photo shoot of key destinations in our city that represent the true characteristics of the women of our city; class, style, strength, love for sports and culture.
The models of the shoot range in age from 25-45 years old, vary in “look” and come from all walks of life. Each tell a story of how they remained beautiful and BOLD in spite of challenges faced by women of color in the Pittsburgh region daily.
The ultimate goal is to celebrate the beauty of women of color while bringing to the forefront issues that we face every day that are easily ignored such as wage gap issues, the effects of gun violence, health disparities and racism.
This project wants to reveal that under strength and beauty lie true challenges that are overcame daily for survival.
We aim to tackle social issues faced by women of color in the Pittsburgh region by revealing facts. Through the media we will challenge local organizations to partner in tackling these issues.
We shall celebrate women of color by giving them the chance to feel pretty while creating a sisterhood and support system to help them survive the challenges they face.
We will give exposure to the City of Pittsburgh by highlighting key destinations in the city that harbor a wealth of history. A couple of the locations were Freedom Corner in the Hill District and the August Wilson Center.
